Stream Clean-Up
Students participated in annual cleanups of the stream (running from Lake Ashburton to Gwynns Falls) and students pulled out trash, tires, and on each trip filled up at least seven contractor bags worth of trash. This photo below took place on Saturday, 4/16/16. Students volunteers from both the middle and high school participated for service learning hours. A total of 15 students participated on this day. Blue Water Baltimore collected the tires, which were pulled out of the stream.
Tree Planting to Protect Waterways
Students planted 100 native trees on the ConneXions property (poplars, oaks, junipers, and pines) and learned how trees filter toxins out of rain, ground, and drinking water, and about how trees beautify neighborhoods. Students learned how trees keep the dirt on the hillside, to slow the process of soil erosion. Students had to identify the different parts of trees as well as how trees create oxygen (photosynthesis) and lower temperature. Trees were planted surrounding the school as well as on hillsides surrounding the neighboring Mondawmin Mall. Blue Water Baltimore donated all of the trees. This was 5/19/16. Both middle and high school students participated in the planting of trees.
Middle school students: Terry, Moyah, and Jasmine.
