Planting of Native Trees
Students planted 100 native trees on the ConneXions property (poplars, oaks, junipers, and pines) and learned from classroom lesson plans about the importance of how trees retain dirt on hillsides (and prevent dirt from washing away), about how trees create oxygen, about how trees filter toxins out of rain, ground, and drinking water, and about how trees beautify neighborhoods. Students had the opportunity to experience and witness growth and were able to examine living specimens in the classroom. Trees were planted surrounding the school as well as on hillsides surrounding the neighboring Mondawmin Mall. This was 5/16/16.
Blue Water Baltimore donated all of the trees.

ConneXions Garden Club with a Native Herb Garden
Students in the 6th grade science class worked with Mr. Bohorquez to propagate seeds in the classroom and then transplanted the crops into the garden, starting the garden club. The goal of the student-led garden club was to grow food for the students to take home and eat.
The garden was built by students on the ConneXions campus. The herb and vegetable garden grew such herbs and vegetables as cilantro, rosemary, cucumber, tomato, and garlic. The garden club also inoculated poplar limbs with pearl oyster and shitake mushrooms. The garden team was started by students and advised by Mama Kutia, Ms. Dawkins, Ms. Toyin, and Mr. Bohorquez.
Students also planted native herbs: Jack-in-the-pulpit, Swamp Milkweed, and Sweet Flag. The garden club ran from 2012-2017.

Raising Trout for Release
Ms. Campbell's 7th grade science class is raising trout from eggs to release in a creek in Hanlon Park (directly across the street from the school). The class began raising the trout in December of 2017 and plan to release the trout in April of 2018.
